I am sorry I won't be there for your lecture this summer! I'm sure it's going to be great... but some people might not like it haha!
I chuckled at Andrew The Status Cuomo - I have not seen that one before, but to be honest, anytime I saw Cuomo or Adams or Holchul on the screen, I scrolled past. Also, I know it's not the point of your post, but so cool that Mamdani was your prof! I can't believe I haven't read Good Muslim, Bad Muslim yet even though his thought and analysis has deeply impacted me and so many Muslim Americans.
Credit where credit is due: I heard some folks saying "Status Cuomo" and think it had become a kind of thing, just a nickname of sorts, albeit one he probably didn't appreciate.
Also, I'm sorry I'll miss you -- and thank you for everything!
I will not listen to anyone who calls Israel's actions genocide. If Israel really is trying to commit genocide, they are doing a terrible job of it, and they have the means to do it if they really wanted. Perhaps Israel has gone overboard in its attempts to defend itself, under the circumstances, but that is far different from wanting to kill most or all of the population of Gaza. And, unless someone criticizing Israel can offer a credible alternative for Israel to defend itself, they are just aiding and abetting terrorists. Hamas are the ones who literally want to commit genocide and call for the killing of anyone who supports Israel.
If you're going to start a comment with "I will not listen to anyone," I'm taking it you don't actually want me to respond. That's why I waited over a week, debating whether it was worth engaging. I've decided to, all the same. Because while plenty of experts and analysts have determined why and how Israel's actions constitute an unfolding genocide, there's an anecdote that reveals the flaw in your thinking. A pattern of evidence that can't be denied
If you know my work, you might know I lead historical tours and leadership programs. One of the first programs I led was to Bosnia around 2012--I took a small group of North American and Western European Muslims to Sarajevo, Mostar... and Srebrenica, where some 8,000 men and boys, aged 12 to 74, were massacred, part of an attempt to erase the Bosniak population through brutality, terror, mass rape, starvation and exhaustion
Tally up the dead and the injured, though, and the majority of Bosniaks didn't directly suffer. But by what demented calculus would we then argue that the intent wasn't actually genocidal? How many innocent people, David, would have to die before we'd start to conclude that maybe the intention is eliminationist, that none of this is accidental, that it is avoidable, not to mention the excess of direct and indirect evidence that points to what Israel wants to do... and is doing
In Bosnia, after all, tens of thousands of people were massacred, and many more forced from their homes. Would anyone honestly argue that, because the majority of Bosniaks and Croats were not killed then, that was therefore either not a genocide, or "not a very efficient one," and how far gone do you have to be to think that's a relevant rejoinder? At some point, perhaps, you'll become aware of this, like all kinds of people all over the world are
Israel-Gaza is not Bosnia. Israel easily has the ability to relatively quickly kill a large percentage of the population of Gaza if it really wanted to do that. And many countries and people accusing Israel, and by extension the US, of genocide are motivated by antipathy toward Israel and the US, and in some cases by political objectives. Hypocrisy in these accusations is rampant. It might be the case that Israel has gone overboard in defending itself, but attempting to commit genocide is ridiculous. Hamas is the party that literally wants to commit genocide. And no one criticizing Israel offers any credible alternative for Israel to stop Hamas from killing Israelis, including you.
I worked in 2 Muslim majority countries (Kuwait and UAE) and 2 Muslim-multiplural countries (Singapore and Malaysia). There are the 4 countries where I have felt the safest AND the most respected as a black woman from the US. I visit the masjids here in the DC-area and always have felt welcomed and appreciated. I can’t say the same for the churches with their white Jesus figures
I wish I was from NYC so I could cast my vote. I’m not - but I want Z to know that he has a friend in me. Love him like a son. 🙏🏾🌹

I hope you do, for your sake
